As I examine artificial intelligence and our relationship to digital identities, I find myself questioning the nature of the "I."
The sense that you are one continuous "I" is one of the best-known illusions in cognitive science. Here, "illusion" means not that you don't exist, but that the feeling of seamlessness is something your mind creates. Several different processes combine to make this happen.
The main factor is autobiographical memory, especially how your brain rebuilds memories each time you recall them. Instead of storing a video of your life, your brain uses the hippocampus and other areas to piece together memories from fragments. Each time you remember, the new version replaces the old one, slightly changed. So, what feels like a smooth story from childhood to now is really a series of linked reconstructions, joined by shared details. It's more like a rope made of overlapping fibers than a single, unbroken strand. Philosopher Derek Parfit made a similar point: personal identity over time is not one continuous thing, but a chain of overlapping psychological connections—like memory, personality, and intention—that are strong between recent versions of yourself and weaker as you look further back.
Beyond memory, your brain is always building a story about who you are, often without you noticing. Split-brain research (Gazzaniga's work) found that the brain has a special process, usually in the left hemisphere, that creates a clear story to explain your actions—even making up reasons when needed. Dennett described the self that comes from this as a "center of narrative gravity": not a physical part of the brain, but a useful fictional author suggested by this ongoing storytelling, much like a novel suggests a narrator. You feel like a continuous author because your brain is always working to explain who you are.
Apart from memory and storytelling, there is also what phenomenologists call the "minimal self"—the basic sense of being a person in a specific place and body, right now. This feeling comes from interoception and proprioception, which are your body's ways of sensing its internal state and position. It does not rely on memory, which is why even people with severe amnesia still feel like an "I." This sense is more fragile than it seems. Experiments like the rubber hand illusion and full-body illusions show that your sense of owning your body and knowing where you are can be changed quickly with the right sensory tricks.
Beneath all these layers, modern neuroscience (including predictive processing theories and Anil Seth's work) sees the self as a model your brain builds and updates all the time. The brain does this for the same reason it models anything else: having a steady, predictable reference point helps you plan, keep relationships, and take responsibility for your actions. The brain also works hard to hide the breaks that would spoil this illusion. Things like sleep, anesthesia, blinking, and the quick movements your eyes make all create real gaps in your experience, but you never notice them. There is no "you" present during those moments to see the break, and memory smooths things over afterward.
Older traditions reached similar ideas just by looking inward. Hume searched for a lasting self and found only a "bundle of perceptions" following one after another, never the thing that owns them. Buddhist philosophy's idea of anatta says much the same: the self is a process, not a thing—a flame passed from candle to candle, not a single, unchanging object. Modern cognitive science has mostly come to a similar view, but now with explanations for how it works: memory reconstruction, storytelling, body sensing, and hiding gaps all combine to create something that feels solid, even though the processes behind it are hidden from us.
